01. Two deserts, one choice: Erg Chebbi vs Erg Chigaga
Most Sahara tours head to Erg Chebbi near Merzouga — the high golden dunes that run along Algeria's border. It is the most accessible, with the best camps and the classic camel-ride-at-sunset experience.
Erg Chigaga, near M'hamid, is wilder, deeper and more remote — a 4x4 journey from Ouarzazate that few travellers make. Choose Chebbi for comfort and convenience, Chigaga for true remoteness.
02. The classic 3-day desert tour from Marrakech
The standard Sahara route from Marrakech is a 3-day loop: over the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Ait Benhaddou and Ouarzazate, through the Dades Valley, on to the Todra Gorge and finally down to the dunes of Merzouga for the desert night.
It is the route featured in our most requested private itinerary, and it packs in more scenery per day than any other drive in Morocco.
03. What a desert camp night is really like
You arrive at the dunes by 4x4, then ride a camel to the camp as the sun drops. Traditional Berber dinner follows, then drumming and singing around the fire under a sky of impossible stars. Camp tents range from simple to luxurious, with private bathrooms and real beds.
Nights are cold — even in summer — so pack layers. The sunrise over the dunes the next morning is worth getting up for.
04. Erg Chebbi to the Todra Gorge and Dades
From the dunes, the classic onward route turns to the Todra Gorge — towering 300-metre limestone cliffs — then winds through the Dades Valley's famous switchbacks and kasbahs. It is one of the most dramatic stretches of road in Morocco.

05. What to pack for the desert
Pack light layers for cold nights, sunscreen and sunglasses, a scarf for sun and sand, comfortable closed shoes, and a torch. A power bank for the camp and a light camera for the stars will earn their place.
Most camps supply water and meals, so you mainly need comfort and curiosity.
06. When to visit the Sahara
October to April is the ideal window — warm by day, cool at night. Summer (June–August) can exceed 45°C and we generally advise against the deep desert then, suggesting the cooler Agafay near Marrakech instead.

The classic loop takes 3 days and 2 nights — one night in a desert camp, plus a night in the Dades or Ouarzazate on the return. It can be stretched to 4 for a more relaxed pace.
Is a camel ride or 4x4 better for the dunes?
We recommend the camel for the sunset ride itself (it is the iconic experience, about an hour) and the 4x4 for reaching the camp from the road. You get the best of both.
