A dry, rocky desert close to Marrakech, with no dunes — bare hills, open horizons and camps laid out for dinner after dark. The short transfer is the point: one night either side of a city week.

- One short transfer each way, nothing else scheduled
Overview
Agafay is close enough that you can leave after lunch and still be at camp for dinner. It is stony rather than sandy — bare hills, no dunes at all — which is exactly why people pick it when the Sahara is two days away.

Day by day
A representative plan. Every trip is adjusted to your dates, your pace and what you want to see.
1
Day 1
Marrakech to Agafay
You leave after lunch. The road runs south across the Haouz plain and then climbs into the bare hills, about 45 minutes from the city. There are no dunes here. Agafay is stone and low ridges with open ground between them.
Camp is ready by late afternoon. Dinner is served outside once it is dark, and the sky over the ridge is properly black. You sleep at camp in a tent or a stone hut.
2
Day 2
Agafay to Marrakech
A slow morning if you want one. The transfer back takes about an hour, so you can be in Marrakech by midday with the afternoon free in the city. Nothing else is planned for the day.
Good to know
Best season
Spring and autumn are the comfortable months. Summer afternoons get hot on the stone, though the transfer is short enough that you can arrive late and still be at camp for dinner.
Pace and driving
About 45 minutes to an hour each way. Day 1 is an afternoon transfer and Day 2 is the return, so the driving never becomes the point of the trip.
Who it suits
People who want one night outside the city without losing a day to the road. If you want tall sand dunes, this is not that. Erg Chebbi at Merzouga takes two days to reach.

8-Day Yoga & Desert Journey in Erg Chigaga
Eight days from Marrakech to a fixed nomadic camp in the dunes of Erg Chigaga: gentle treks with a support 4x4, daily yoga in the open, and five nights at the rhythm of the Sahara without moving camp.

Merzouga
The road south ends at Erg Chebbi, the tall dunes people picture when they picture the Sahara. You take a 4x4 for the last stretch to camp and get the hour before sunrise while the sand is still cold.

Erg Chigaga
Chigaga is the one you take for distance rather than scenery. The dunes run wide, the camps sit far apart and the track in is quiet. It needs a proper day of driving, so it belongs inside a longer route.
