A day on the Atlantic: the blue and white medina, the ramparts above the harbour, the workshops behind them. The drive is flat and the town is walkable, so it works as a coast day from Marrakech.

The day
Marrakech to Essaouira and back
You leave Marrakech after breakfast and take the road west. It is flat and straight the whole way, about two and a half hours, with argan trees along the route. You reach Essaouira before lunch.
The afternoon is on foot: the blue-and-white lanes behind the ramparts, the fishing harbour below the walls, then the woodworking and silver workshops off the main streets. You start back in the late afternoon and are in Marrakech the same evening.
Good to know
Best season
Essaouira is windy through most of the year. Bring a layer even in summer, and know that the beach stays comfortable while the lanes inside the walls are sheltered.
Pace and driving
About two and a half hours each way on a flat road, with one short stop. The town is walked end to end, so the day is easy on the legs.

8-Day Yoga & Desert Journey in Erg Chigaga

Agafay Desert
A dry, rocky desert close to Marrakech, with no dunes — bare hills, open horizons and camps laid out for dinner after dark. The short transfer is the point: one night either side of a city week.

Merzouga
The road south ends at Erg Chebbi, the tall dunes people picture when they picture the Sahara. You take a 4x4 for the last stretch to camp and get the hour before sunrise while the sand is still cold.
