Chefchaouen is up in the Rif, north of Fes, and almost all of it is blue — walls, steps, doorways. A long drive to a town you walk slowly in, for one good afternoon.

Overview
A long drive north into the Rif and one good afternoon on foot. Almost everything in Chefchaouen is blue — walls, steps, doorways — which is easier to believe standing there than in a photograph.

Day by day
A representative plan. Every trip is adjusted to your dates, your pace and what you want to see.

The day
Casablanca to Chefchaouen and back
Casablanca to Chefchaouen is about five and a half hours each way, so plan this as a day of its own. You leave before dawn, head north past Rabat and up through the Rif, and arrive around midday.
The afternoon is on foot: the kasbah square, the lanes of blue walls, steps and doorways, then the short climb to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint above the town. You start back in the late afternoon and are in Casablanca after dark.
Good to know
Pace and driving
About five and a half hours each way. The drive takes most of the day, you get the afternoon on foot, and you are back late.
Best season
Spring and autumn are the comfortable months in the Rif. Winter can slow the higher roads after snow, and summer afternoons in the open lanes are hot.
Who it suits
Travellers who want the blue streets enough to trade a full day for them. If eleven hours in the car does not appeal, Chefchaouen fits better on a northern route from Fes.
