The old town's blue-washed walls, doors and steps are the reason everyone comes. Stories vary — the colour is said to keep mosquitoes away, reflect heat, or symbolise the sea and sky, with added Jewish influence from the town's history. Whatever the origin, it is stunning, especially in morning light.
Chaouen, as locals call it, sits at around 600 metres in the Rif Mountains and has a laid-back, Andalusian feel that is worlds away from the hustle of Marrakech.
02. The best viewpoints
The Spanish Mosque on the hill above town is the classic sunset spot, with the whole blue medina spread below. The Kasbah and its garden are relaxing, and the Plaza Uta el-Hammam with the kasbah walls is the natural centre of life — grab a mint tea and watch the world go by.
