01. First impressions: the Red City
Marrakech is Morocco's most famous city, and the reality delivers. Red-ochre walls wrap a labyrinth of souks, palaces and gardens, with the Koutoubia minaret standing sentinel over it all. It is loud, vibrant and unapologetically alive.
Most visitors arrive at Menara Airport and are in the medina within 20 minutes — for us locals, it is the natural start (or finish) of almost every Moroccan itinerary.
02. The sights you cannot miss
Jemaa el-Fnaa square is the beating heart — storytellers, snake charmers, henna artists and food stalls that come alive at dusk. Koutoubia Mosque, the Bahia Palace with its courtyards, and the Saadian Tombs tell the city's imperial story.
Beyond the crowds, the Majorelle Garden and Yves Saint Laurent Museum are a calm, cobalt-blue escape, while the Ben Youssef Madrasa is one of the finest pieces of Islamic architecture in North Africa.
03. The souks: getting the price right
The medina's souks sell spices, leather, carpets, lanterns and ceramics. Bargaining is expected — start around half the asking price and meet in the middle with good humour. If someone is too helpful, a polite "La, shukran" (no, thank you) works wonders.
Cash is king in the medina, and the smaller the shop, the more likely a fair cash deal. Buy from the artisan who makes it, not the middleman reselling.
04. Where to stay: riad or hotel?

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are ideal — warm days, cool nights and manageable crowds. Summer is hot (40°C+) but the pools and air-conditioned riads soften it. Winter brings clear, comfortable days and the best room rates.
06. Easy day trips from Marrakech
Marrakech is the perfect base for day trips: the Ourika Valley in the High Atlas (waterfalls and Berber villages), the Agafay desert with its stone landscapes and luxury camps, and Ouzoud waterfalls. For a longer escape, the full Marrakech–Merzouga desert loop crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass, Ait Benhaddou and the Dades Valley.
