01. A slower, saltier Morocco
Just a 2.5-hour drive from Marrakech, Essaouira could not feel further away. The fortified medina, painted white and blue, wraps around a medieval port where blue fishing boats bob alongside the stone ramparts. It is a welcome antidote to the intensity of the interior.
The sea breeze keeps it pleasant even in summer, which is why artists, surfers and filmmakers love it. Scenes from Game of Thrones were shot along its walls.
02. The harbour and the catch of the day
The port is the heart of the town. Watch the fishermen haul in their catch, then eat it — grilled sardines, calamari and sole at the stalls overlooking the water are among the best-value meals in Morocco.
Early morning is the liveliest time to walk the harbour, before the day-trippers from Marrakech arrive.
03. Wind, waves and watersports
Essaouira's constant breeze makes it Morocco's windsurfing and kitesurfing capital. Beginners can take lessons in the calmer bay, while experienced riders chase the waves beyond the ramparts. Even if you do not ride, watching the colourful kites is its own show.
04. The ramparts and the medina
Walk the 18th-century ramparts for sea views and photo angles over the harbour, explore the medina's arts and crafts (thuya woodwork is the local speciality), and climb the Scala de la Kasbah. Moulay Hassan square is the place for a mint tea and people-watching.
The medina is compact and car-free — easy to wander without getting lost.
05. When to visit Essaouira
Summer (June–September) is the best time for the beach and watersports, with the breeze keeping 25–30°C comfortable. Spring and autumn are quieter and lovely. Winter can be windy and cool.
